archoncad in-depth online training

"I recently switched from AutoCAD Light to Vectorworks. I was able to get up and running on Vectorworks very quickly by working through the manual, but the first couple of projects were a bit rough. I was only using the first way that I had figured out how to do things, which was not necessarily the fastest or most accurate.
"I have just completed Jonathon's 3D course, and it has opened a whole new world for me. My design is no longer restricted to rectilinear planes. I can now do angled surfaces and compound curves, spin them around to have a look at them, and chop them into templates for fabrication.
"I'm very pleased to have established contact with Jonathon, and I will be storing up questions for him as I work my way through manuals and the movies he has recorded of our tutorials. Jonathon leaves you with fantastic resources for consolidating your learning at the end of the course. Learning remotely from home is very convenient."
Juliet Cooke, Exhibition Designer
"I just wanted to drop a quick note to say thanks for the course currently on-line with Jonathan Pickup. I appreciate his knowledge but in particular his skill in conveying that knowledge to his students. Aside from being a VectorWorks expert, his ability to change teaching styles whether it be a very precise manner or slowing down with great patience, displays that he is an excellent teacher. Thanks again." - Tom
"A short note just to let you know, how pleased i am that i made the decision to do the Landmark training sessions with Jonathan. I have found them very useful in coming to grips with learning the capabilities that the software has, my only regret being it took me so long to finally take the plunge! As with all things new, they are only useful once you get to know what they can do, reading the manuals and doing the exercises are great, but having someone online to talk with and work things through is an invaluable tool in mastering the complexities that make the software so useful.
Thanks again for the push!" - Alex.
In-depth training is a structured online training system, designed to teach you Vectorworks, delivered to your computer in bite-sized chunks. We use a high speed Internet connection so you can see my computer screen and you can talk to me and the other students. If we need to, your screen can be shown so I can watch you working and correct any mistakes.

Here is what one of the customers says:
"I just wanted to say thanks for the online training. The fact that I could take the training from my office was a huge help. Jonathan showed me just how easy Vectorworks is and allowed us the time to put the task to practice during class time. Being able to ask questions along the way also made a difference, it helps to understand what you are doing at the time rather than being confused all the way to the end.
"I hadn't really given Vectorworks much thought. We had the package for 2 years collecting dust so to speak before we found out about the online classes. I'm still not up to speed on the whole package but there is some comfort in knowing the I can request a class on a particular skill and should enough other participants want the class that Jonathan can make it happen.
"I've had about 5 classes now and I've gone from knowing the basics to being able to complete a basic landscape plan and converting that into a model. So I'm still a little slow at it but by setting myself at least an hour a day I'm building up my speed. I actually find that once I get on it I don't want to stop. While it is work, it's actually a lot of fun.
"The best class for me was learning how to import a file and using it as if was my own. Recently another designer sent us a pdf of her plan to quote.. In a matter of minutes I had worked out the area to calculate soil, concrete etc and working out the distance of a curved garden for a mowing strip can take ages manually was done in seconds. The boss was pretty stoked as it cut out over an hour of time for a quantity survey from this plan.
I definately won't be hesitating in coming back for more classes.
Thanks Jonathan

3D Visualization Workshop

The aim of this workshop is unlock the mysterous world of 3D Visualisation. In this workshop we will work through a interior or exterior project.

Session 1 - Preparation
This session is about completing your model in preparation for lighting and texturing. For an interior project, this could cover completing the floor, benchtops, ceilings and so on. For an exterior project, this might cover completing the roof, site, patio or deck and so on.

Session 2 - Lighting
There are several lights in Vectorworks, so we need to learn how to use them. In this session we will add background and feature lighting to our model. Lighting is so important, probably the most important part to get right for your model.

Session 3 - Textures
After the lighting, the textures are important to help describe the model - the surfaces, reflections and so on. With a few reflections, bumps and image props, you can make the model come alive. So, that is what we will do.

Session 4 - Rendering
THis session brings it all together - the lighting, textures and 3D model. There are several choices in rendering. SOme options are beautiful and slow, some are quick, but not so beautiful. We will cover setting up 3D views, and look at quick ways to export the final renderings.

Residential Concept Design online course

Many of my clients want to use Vectorworks just for conceptual design. This means that the users often want a cut-down Vectorworks interface that just shows the tools they want, to make it faster to draw. Often these users do not want to draw the walls of the building, they want a quick way of modeling the building, a way to see the building on the site, and they want to be able to check the building with a solar study.

In response, I have made an online course, along with a supporting Vector-workout manual, which is included in the course. I have kept this course as concise as possible. Before undertaking this training you need a working knowledge of the Vectorworks screen. You should have completed the quickstart guide to Vectorworks or the Essential Tutorial manual.

This is a 6 session course:
Session 1 : Workspace Editing and Document Set up
Session 2 : Creating Spaces (Rooms)
Session 3 : Site Modelling
Session 4 : Visualization
Session 5 : Walls and quick Doors and Windows
Session 6 : Simple Roof and simple 3D Modeling
